Columbus in Color

HELLO... TShirt

'Columbus Icon' design

Trash Flower

This shirt is meant to encourage recycling and to promote pride in Columbus neighborhoods. All proceeds will be donated to the Columbus Neighborhood Pride Campaign.

Be classy & not trashy Columbus

Our group decided on college humor tees with a focus on Recycling. We didn't want to come out with a bold recycling statement, rather a subtle statement with humor to attract attention.

Columbus Skyline

Columbus Skyline Tee by Nathalie Kossek

"A skyline is a symbol of any great city's pride. The silhouette of Columbus's skyline is a backdrop to the bold statement of COLUMBUS OHIO. We wanted to highlight points of interest within Columbus, some well known and others an adventure waiting to be explored."

consists of the Columbus skyline on the back with different venues to visit. On the front is a outline of ohio with a star for Columbus. I chose this as my first design because it is simple and recognizable. There is a big block of text stating the skyline's location and a gradient of all the venues.

Check it out!

Another T-shirt Design

The bold red glowing outline of Ohio encapsulates a few of Columbus's best places of interest. From The Book Loft in German Village, to Skully's music venue in the Short North arts district. On a warm spring day there is no better place to be than at Whetstone's Park of Roses. These are a few places that make Columbus special to us, and we dare to ask, "What does your Columbus look like?"

Another shirt design draft...

Sorry for the quality, but you get the idea. The design works with almost all the t-shirt styles/colors if you want to use your imagination (I am too lazy to upload every single version).

OSU's New Email System

I am interested to know people take on the new OSU student email system. What do you like about it? What do you dislike? How does it compare to your non-osu web-client (like gmail)?Whats your thoughts on loosing @osu.edu and being forced to @buckeyemail.osu.edu? Was windows live the best choice?

Cincinnati's beautification movement

Hey, so I almost forgot about this campaign that started when I was growing up in Cincinnati. It's a good source of ideas; I remember it started out just from the "Don't trash the 'Nati" slogan (which was turned into some interesting sayings by teenagers), then developed into a larger urban renewal/beautification campaign.

To show…

We are now in a point in our society where we are bombarded by imagery. When does creating that killer image become really effective? We are desensitized, so how do we make it work? It could be dangerous!

FOR THURSDAY:
We are going to start to define the actual system. How are we going to put this into place?
If you have a good way of summarizing this into a sentence, a phrase, a marker, PLEASE SHARE WITH US!

We Are All Columbus

Just a little t-shirt idea I came up with for our project. It's just for fun, so let me know what you think.

Digital Paint

Anyone else a fan of digital painting?  As I continue to research contemporary illustration I've noticed a natural migration towards the computer as a drawing aid.  No more messy oils, no more hesitation, these folks attack their drawings via wacom and the results are rather shiny.
I know, I know, they're just pixels, they don't truly express the human condition and the computer acts to remove the artists hand from the work but I can't help but be impressed at the sight of perfect transparent overlays and crisp bold colors.  Blah blah...here are some cool sights I recommend:

click around, these folks are impressive.

For you old fashioned people with brows held high I recommend Drawn! The Illustration and Cartooning Blog

Maybe with a little buttering up Herb will allow for some digital painting tutorials eh?

ITEMS TO CONSIDER

ARTICAL 1 |

OFF CAMPUS RECYCLING: With the lack of city wide recycling pick up (free of charge) many of the residents of Columbus refuse to recycle. With a minimal small fee, residents can have Rumpke pick up personal recycling once a week. The disadvantage of this however is in the size of recycling containers. Students at The Ohio State University have addressed both concern in paying for recycling and the accessibility to find drop off recycling centers. The need to have a community wide recycling program is a must and would be beneficial on the outskirts of the Universities campus. Students need to have close (walking) distances to recycling drop of zones.

ARTICAL 2 |

NEIGHBORHOOD BLIGHT: Columbus is one of the largest cities with a massive number representing unattended and vacant houses. These areas throughout the city demand crime, drug usage, and property devalue. Residents are concern for both their safety, but more so the safety of children that often play in or around these vacant spaces. There are over 5,200 documented vacant housed in Franklin County (and many more undocumented). Blocks with accessible vacant structures have twice the crime rate as blocks without. One in five houses are vacant in Weinland Park and the Near South Side; One in six are vacant in Franklinton and King Lincoln. There were 10,000 foreclosures in Franklin county in the last year affecting 100,000 people. There is a need to clean up, create awareness, and find new solutions to revitalize and create new uses for these spaces. One of the larges issues is that not many people realize this is one of our biggest issues the city and county is facing.

ARTICAL 3 |
AREA PARK CLEANUP: One of Columbus Ohio's greatest features is it's love of parks. With over 50 registered public areas, residents have a vast selection in choosing which park to visit. The parks and recreation of Columbus also houses the many ravine parks that are nestled in many communities close to the The Ohio State University. These ravines, such as Iuka and Glen Echo serve not only as parks for meeting and fun, but activate shelter to many animals and waterways that are necessary for the cities Eco system. The stability of the ravines has been directly threatened by development and sadly human activity. Utility placement and uncontrolled invasive plant species have disturbed the natural ecosystem. Much is needed to educate and involve the community in the City of Columbus in conservation efforts to restore and preserve these natural areas. Through new solutions/systems, education, and involvement we can prevent and alleviate further environmental damage.

UPDATE

Today we will continue working in class on project 2. For next Tuesday please have your digital file ready to be dropped into the drop box. As well as, the final printed magazine cover, mounted on black on black presentation board. You should have 2 inches all around your image, so make sure to measure correctly.

Next Tuesday will be our crit and afterwards I will be handing out a reading and the next update to our projects.

Below is some info regarding the layout and Mounting of your Project 2.

THE PROPER WAY TO BOARD UP A DESIGN
Supplies Needed:
Black Mounting/Presentation Board
Xacto Knife
Metal Straightedge
Spray Adhesive (aka Spray Mount) or DuoTac

1. Print it Out — Most likely your comp will have been designed in RGB at screen resolution. Most consumer laser and inkjet printers do a pretty accurate job these days of printing from RGB. To prevent pixelation though, scale your design down a bit (75-80%) in the print dialog, if its larger than 11 x 17.

2. Crop it Down — Place your printed comp on a flat surface that you don't mind messing up. I usually use a scrap piece of presentation board because it is hard enough not to cut through in one pass, and soft enough not to dull a blade too quickly. Place the straightedge on the comp and cut along the edge with an Xacto knife removing excess paper.

3.Prepare a Board — Mounting board typically comes in 20x30 inch sheets. Measure your cropped design comp and choose a size for your mounting board that leaves at least 2 inches of excess around the paper itself. Use the straightedge and Xacto knife to cut the board to size. When you have it cut, center the comp on the board and use a pencil to lightly mark where each corner should line up.

4. Board it Up — Take your can of Spray Mount and design comp outside and give the back one even coat of adhesive. Allow the adhesive a minute or two to dry, then bring it back inside. Line up two of the corners on your comp to the marks on your board, press down one side and smooth down the rest, being careful not to get any bubbles under the paper. Erase the pencil marks and you're good to go. Other adhesives like rubber cement, or DuoTac can be used, I prefer DuoTac for its ease and lack of harm to the environment.

If using DuoTac- Cut a sheet to size of comp. Lay com face side down, and pull outer coating of DuoTac. Take corners align and adhere. Once adhered to the comp, carefully pull the back side coating exposing the adhesive side that goes onto the board. Follow the last set of directions.

THIS IS IT. THE TIME IS NOW.

So, As we begin to re-define, question and realize the power of what we are capable of doing, I want to urge each of you to focus on what we spoke about during last class. What is your role as a student, what is your role as a designer? If you are tired of the BS being spoken, what can you do to change the intention? Is one mind larger than one, yes, it is, and collectively, we can make a dint in this system we all are a part of. It will take commitment, it will take pride, it will take us breaking the norms and we can take joy in the ripping of the syllabus into small pieces.

The point of this class is to teach you about image graphics. What is image graphics? Can we redefine how we learn about image graphics by changing the typical? What will impact you the most as you leave here, what will linger in your mind as you make critical and moral decisions about design in our world, and how can we begin to understand that change is commitment and doesn't happen over night (Regardless of what Bruce Mau speaks)?

As some of you may already have: These could be our rules of the class: This is no longer about vector masks and clone stamping.

RULE ONE: Find a place you trust, and then try trusting it for awhile.

RULE TWO: General duties of a student - pull everything out of your teacher; pull everything out of your fellow students.

RULE THREE: General duties of a teacher - pull everything out of your students.

RULE FOUR: Consider everything an experiment.

RULE FIVE: be self-disciplined - this means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.

RULE SIX: Nothing is a mistake. There's no win and no fail, there's only make.

RULE SEVEN: The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It's the people who do all of the work all of the time who eventually catch on to things.

RULE EIGHT: Don't try to create and analyze at the same time. They're different processes.

RULE NINE: Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It's lighter than you think.

RULE TEN: "We're breaking all the rules. Even our own rules. And how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for X quantities." (John Cage)

HINTS: Always be around. Come or go to everything. Always go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully, often. Save everything - it might come in handy later.
